Dawkins looked up from the piece of paper at the astonished man's face. "It's dated with today's date."
Driver snapped to his feet and snatched the piece of paper out of the Inspector's hand. He glanced at it hurriedly and handed it back. "That's not even Flora's handwriting."
Dawkins reread the note with a perplexed look on his expressive face. "It's signed 'Flora'. That was the woman's name, wasn't it?"
Harry Driver was suddenly aware that he didn't like the way the Inspector's line of questioning was leading them. His eyes danced uneasily from the Lieutenant to Dawkins and back to the young officer again. "What the hell's going on here?" he snapped.
The Inspector crammed the piece of paper back into his coat pocket without folding it. His face had furrowed into a grim visage that accentuated the wear and tear of the years.
"We've got us a real problem here, Colonel. Somebody murdered your housekeeper. The fact is, they didn't just murder the poor womanthey mutilated her. Flora Saint Quentin's heart was cut out."
The younger officer shifted his stance uneasily.
